Our Executive Committee and Board

Our executive directors lead our Executive Committee in the execution of our strategy

Maria Ramos

Maria is the Chief Executive and joined the Board as an executive director in 2009. She is a member of the Group Risk and Capital Management, Concentration Risk, Social and Ethics and Information Technology Committees.

Maria was previously the director-general of the National Treasury and in January 2004, she was appointed as the group chief executive of Transnet Limited. Maria joined Absa as Group Chief Executive in March 2009, and is a member of the Barclays PLC Executive Committee.

Maria is a non-executive director of Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA. She is also a member of the International Business Council Executive Committee; the World Bank Chief Economist Advisory Panel; Business Leadership South Africa; and the Banking Association of South Africa.

David Hodnett

David joined the Board as an Executive Director in 2008. He is the Chairman of the Models Committee and is a member of the Group Risk and Capital Management, Concentration Risk and Information Technology Committees.

David is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Financial Director. He completed his articles with KPMG and became a partner in the financial services team. He then joined Standard Bank group, where he was involved in group risk and retail credit functions. David joined the Group in 2008 as the Chief Risk Officer and became the Group’s Financial Director on 1 March 2010. In December 2013, David was appointed as Deputy Chief Executive Officer. He has oversight of the Chief Operating Officer’s portfolio and responsibility for significant Group-wide change initiatives.

Craig Bond

Craig is Chief Executive: Retail and Business Banking (RBB). He joined the Group and our Executive Committee in 2013.

Previously, he was the chief executive of Standard Bank Asia, chief executive of Standard Bank Africa, managing director of Tourvest Investment Corporation Limited, head of personal, private and branch banking at Nedbank and Peoples Bank and corporate and structured finance consultant at Investec. He spent 12 years at Standard Bank and eight years at Nedbank.

Nomkhita Nqweni

Nomkhita is the Chief Executive: Wealth, Investment Management and Insurance. She was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2013.

Nomkhita spent majority of her career at Alexander Forbes performing a variety of functions and before joining Barclays Africa in 2010, she was the managing director of Alexander Forbes Financial Services Holdings Limited.

Qualifications: BSc, Post Graduate Diploma (Investment Management)

Stephen van Coller

Stephen is the Chief Executive: Corporate and Investment Banking. He joined the Group in 2006 and was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2009.

Stephen initially worked at Ernst & Young Inc. In 1991 he moved to the United Kingdom, where he held a number of positions. Returning to South Africa, Stephen worked at Deutsche Bank where his last role was head: coverage and corporate advisory. After joining the Group in 2006, Stephen held the positions of Deputy Chief Executive and Head: Investment Banking at Absa Capital. He became the Chief Executive of CIB in 2009.

Arrie Rautenbach

Arrie Rautenbach is the Chief Risk Officer for Barclays Africa Group Limited. Prior to his appointment, Arrie was Chief Executive Retail Banking responsible for managing Retail Banking across the African operations. He began his career with Absa Group in Bankfin in the late 1990s and has since held a number of leadership positions including Head of Retail Banking in South Africa and Managing

Executive: Absa Card, Managing Executive: Customer Segments and Managing Executive: Branch network.

Bobby Malabie

Bobby is the Group Executive: Marketing and Corporate Affairs. He joined the Group and the Executive Committee in 2010.

He has held senior roles within Charter Life, Nedbank Group and South African Breweries. He then joined Liberty Group, where he held the position of chief executive officer: marketing and distribution.

Qualifications: BCom (Accounting), MBA, MDP

Charles Russon

Charles is the Chief Operating Officer. He joined the Group in 2006 and the Executive Committee in 2014.

He completed his articles with KPMG and then joined Merrill Lynch in London as financial controller for credit products. Charles worked for Deutsche Bank in London and Frankfurt from 1998 to 2006 as the rates head of product control, before he joined Absa Capital in September 2006 as chief financial officer. He became the chief operating officer of Corporate and Investment Banking in October 2007 and regional head of finance for Barclays Africa in September 2012. Charles was appointed as Chief Operating Officer for Barclays Africa Group in May 2014.

Charles Wheeler

Charles is the General Counsel. He joined the Group and the Executive Committee in 2013.

Previously he worked as director: legal services at Standard Bank until 2003; as group executive: commercial legal at MTN Group Limited until 2010 and most recently as a legal consultant for Webber Wentzel.

Sarah Louw

Sarah is the Chief Executive: Human Resources. She joined the Group and the Executive Committee in 2013.

She was previously employed at Anglo American Plc for 24 years and most recently held the position of head of human resources: other mining and industrial businesses.

Qualifications: HDip (Labour Relations); Dip (Personnel Management) (IPM)

Yasmin Masithela

Yasmin is the Head of Compliance. She joined the Group in 2011 and was previously the general counsel for Wealth, Investment Management and Insurance. Yasmin completed her articles with Webber Wentzel and became an associate in the South African project finance team. In 2011, she joined Siemens Limited where she later led the projects and export finance department.

Prior to joining Barclays Africa Group, she was the partner at responsible for general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, corporate and project finance at Phukubje Pierce Masithela. Yasmin is also a non-executive director of a public sector utility company and a company listed on the JSE.

Qualifications: LLB (UCT), Higher Diploma, Company Law (WITS) and LLM, Tax Law (WITS)

Our Board provides governance and oversight

Wendy Lucas-Bull

Wendy joined the Board as an independent director and Chairman in 2013. She is also Chairman of Absa Bank and Absa Financial Services. Wendy is the Chairman of the Directors’ Affairs Committee, and she is a member of the Board Finance, Group Risk and Capital Management, Group Remuneration and Human Resources, Concentration Risk, Social and Ethics and Information Technology Committees. She is a permanent attendee of the Group Audit and Compliance Committee.

Wendy is one of the founders of the Peotona Group. She was previously chief executive of FirstRand Limited’s retail businesses and prior to that an executive director of Rand Merchant Bank Holdings. Former non-executive directorships include those at Anglo American Platinum Limited, the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Alexander Forbes, Eskom, Nedbank, Telkom, Aveng (deputy chairman), Lafarge Industries (chairman), the South African Financial Markets Advisory Board, Discovery Holdings, Dimension Data PLC and the Momentum Group. She was also a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Black Economic Empowerment.

Trevor Munday

Trevor joined the Board as an independent director in 2007. On 19 September 2013, he was appointed as Lead Independent Director of the Group. He is the Chairman of the Board Finance, Group Risk and Capital Management and Concentration Risk Committees and is a member of the Group Audit and Compliance and Directors’ Affairs Committees.

In 2001, Trevor was appointed as an executive director of Sasol Limited, with global responsibility for finance and accounting, risk management, internal audit, corporate affairs and planning. In 2003, he assumed responsibility for Sasol Group’s global chemical businesses. He retired as deputy chief executive of Sasol on 31 December 2006.

Trevor is the non-executive chairman of Reunert Limited and a non-executive director of Illovo Sugar Limited.

Maria Ramos

Alex Darko

Alex joined the Board as an independent director in 2014 and is a member of the Group Audit and Compliance, Group Remuneration and Human Resources, and the Information Technology Committees.

Alex held a number of senior positions at Dun & Bradstreet, including director of UK shared services, director of finance – Dun & Bradstreet Europe Ltd and head of accounting re-engineering. He later moved back to Ghana and worked for Ashanti Goldfields in a number of senior roles. Alex was vice-president, knowledge and information at AngloGold Ashanti from 2005 to 2010.

Alex is an executive mentor and an independent consultant in organisational culture, change management and strategy. He also serves as a non-executive director on the boards of Business Connexion Limited, Consolidated Infrastructure Limited and Mazor Group Limited

Ashok Vaswani

Ashok joined the Board as a non-executive director in 2013. He is a member of the Information Technology Committee.

Ashok is the Chief Executive of Barclays Personal and Corporate Banking. He spent 20 years in a number of senior roles at Citigroup. Ashok was a partner at Brysam Global Partners LLC, a New York City-based private equity firm focused on building retail financial service businesses in emerging markets. He joined Barclays in 2010 and was the Chief Executive of the Barclays Africa businesses from October 2010 to September 2011.

Colin Beggs
Appointed: June 2010

Colin joined the Board as an independent director in 2010. He is the Chairman of the Group Audit and Compliance Committee and is a member of the Group Risk and Capital Management, Directors’ Affairs, Board Finance and Concentration Risk Committees.

Colin is the former senior partner and chief executive officer of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in southern Africa and retired from that position in June 2009. He was also the chairman of the SAICA board in 2002/3 and was a member of the Accounting Practices Board.

He is also a non-executive director of Sasol Limited, SAB Zenzele Holdings Limited and the Ethics Institute of South Africa.

Francis Okomo-Okello

Francis joined the Board as an independent director in 2014. He is the Chairman of Barclays Bank of Kenya Limited. Francis is a member of the Social and Ethics Committee.

Francis is an Albert Parvin fellow of Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, and a fellow of The Kenya Institute of Bankers. He serves as chairman of TPS Eastern Africa Limited (Serena Group of Hotels and Lodges), and as a non-executive director of the Nation Media Group. Currently, Francis is the executive director in charge of legal and corporate affairs at Industrial Promotion Services Group of Companies, an affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

He also serves as a member of the advisory board of the Strathmore Business School (Strathmore University, Nairobi) and is a member of the advisory committee of the Aga Khan University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences – East Africa.

Mark Merson

Mark is Barclays Plc Deputy Group Finance Director and is also Chief Financial Officer for the Investment Bank. He is a member of the Group Risk and Capital Management and Board Finance Committees.

Mark is a graduate of Oxford University, chartered accountant and was previously a partner in the financial services consulting practice of Deloitte. He joined Barclays in 2003 as Group Financial Controller and during his career to date, has held positions as the Head of Investor Relations (2005) and Financial Controller and CFO for UK and EMEA in the Investment Bank (2009) before becoming global CFO for CIB at the end of 2011.

Mark is a chartered accountant (UK).

Mohamed Husain

Mohamed joined the Board as an independent director in 2008. He is the Chairman of the Group Remuneration and Human Resources and Social and Ethics Committees and is a member of the Group Audit and Compliance, Board Finance and Directors’ Affairs Committees.

Mohamed has been an attorney for 29 years, during which time he has represented a diverse range of clients in commercial and corporate litigation, insolvency law and administrative law. He was a councillor of the Law Society of South Africa. Currently, he serves on its audit and risk committees and chairs the remuneration committee. He is a past president of the London-based Commonwealth Lawyers Association and of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces. He is a past chairman of the Attorneys Insurance Indemnity Fund.

Mohamed serves as director of Knowles Husain Lindsay Incorporated and KLH Investments Proprietary Limited and is the non-executive chairman of Andulela Investment Holdings Limited.

Patrick Clackson

Patrick joined the Board as a non-executive director in 2013. He is the Chairman of the Information Technology Committee and is a member of the Group Remuneration and Human Resources Committee.

Patrick Clackson is head of business transformation for Barclays, responsible for leading Barclays cost and business efficiency programme. Patrick was previously chief executive of Barclays Corporate and Investment Banking in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Patrick joined Barclays Investment Bank in December 1998 where he was the chief financial officer for ten years.

Paul O’Flaherty

Paul joined the Board as an independent director in February 2016 and is a member of the Group Audit and Compliance, Group Risk and Capital Management, and the Concentration Risk Committees.

Paul started his career in auditing and became a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers South Africa before spending time in the construction industry in South Africa, Africa and in the Middle East. He first served as deputy chief executive officer of Group Five Limited and then chief financial officer of Al Naboodah Construction Group. From 2010 to 2013, he was the finance director and group executive for Group Capital of Eskom Holdings (SOC) Limited. Paul was most recently the chief executive officer of ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited (July 2014 to February 2016).

Paul is the chief executive officer of Al Naboodah Construction Group and a non-executive director of enX Group Limited and ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited.

Peter Matlare

Peter joined the Board as an independent director in 2011.

Peter began his career with the Urban Foundation and Citibank and gained international experience, particularly in Europe. Peter is the previous chief executive officer of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), chief strategy and business development officer of Vodacom SA Proprietary Limited and executive director of commercial at Vodacom SA Proprietary Limited. Most recently, Peter was the chief executive officer of Tiger Brands Limited.

Peter is a non-executive director of Oceana Group Limited.

Yolanda Cuba

Yolanda joined the Board as an independent director in 2006. She is a member of the Group Remuneration and Human Resources, Board Finance and Concentration Risk Committees.

Yolanda became chief executive officer of Mvelaphanda Group Limited in 2007. She joined the South African Breweries Limited as executive director for development and decision support in September 2011 and was subsequently appointed as executive director for strategy and business support. Yolanda was appointed as chief officer: strategy and new business at Vodacom Group Limited in November 2014.

She is a non-executive director of Reatile Resources Proprietary Limited. She is also a member of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Investment and Endowment Committee.
